How to Fix "error: failed to push some refs to" in Git

The remote repository contains commits that do not exist in your local copy (e.g. someone merged a PR or edited on GitHub). Git prevents overwriting remote history without pulling first.

error: failed to push some refs to 'origin/main'

Quick Fix Checklist

  1. Pull and rebase remote commits on top of your local work: git pull --rebase origin <branch>
  2. Resolve any merge conflicts, then continue rebase: git rebase --continue
  3. Push your updated branch cleanly: git push origin <branch>
